MARGATE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida substitute teacher is under investigation after students said she hit them with a ruler for being too loud.

According to one of the students, the incident occurred Thursday in a classroom inside Margate Elementary School. "She hit the ruler on the desk and it hit me," said the student, who asked not to be identified.

The student said the substitute teacher became upset with her class and began whipping her and other students with a ruler. "She was telling us to be quiet and we were being quiet, and she just started going around and hitting people with the ruler because a few people were talking," she said.

The student's aunt said she was upset when her nice told her what had happened. "I was outraged that somebody like that would be allowed to teach, and personally, if it was my kid, I would probably be in jail right now," said Lindsay Alascia.

The school's principal was notified about the incident. District officials said they are investigating and released this statement reading in part: "The substitute teacher in question was sent home following reports of the incident and has been temporarily removed from the District's substitute list."

Parents also contacted police, who launched their own investigation.

The student's cousin wants the teacher accused to face consequences. "If she can go to jail I would like her to go to jail," said Toni Beckman. "I don't think she should even be around kids at all."

As of Friday night, the teacher had not been charged.
