Callahan Tunnel on track to reopen on Monday

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - MassDOT officials announced on Friday that the Callahan Tunnel rehabilitation project is on track and will reopen on Monday morning at 5:00 a.m.

"MassDOT is pleased to share that this closure is trending to end several days ahead of schedule," Secretary Richard Davey said in a press conference on Friday.

The total budget for the project was $25 million, which is down from the $35 million estimate.

Work will continue through the weekend as the contractor paves the tunnel and installs lane marking.

In order to ensure that the tunnel is open on Monday, MassDOT announced the closure of Exit 24/Gov’t Center on I-93 Southbound on Sunday night into Monday morning. I-93 Southbound through Boston will be completely closed overnight Tuesday into Wednesday to help return traffic to pre-closure conditions.

The Callahan Tunnel closed in December for what Davey called necessary repairs to the 52-year-old tunnel.

The project had a deadline of March 12. The contractor is on track to receive an incentive bonus for each day the tunnel is open before that deadline.
