Accused child rapist dies after apparent self-inflicted injuries

Posted: Updated:
Accused child rapist John Burbine was found in his cell Friday morning in need of emergency medical attention, according to the Middlesex Sheriff Department.

Cambridge paramedics were notified and he was transported to Mass. General Hospital where he later died.

The injuries appeared to be self-inflicted.

His wife Marian Burbine, who is charged with six counts of reckless endangerment of a child and was under house arrest, got an emergency court order to see her husband. She was escorted by police to the hospital.

She was brought in to make "next of kin" decisions for her husband before his death was announced.

Burbine was charged with 100 counts related to rape and sexual abuse of children and child pornography.

The alleged victims were several children in the care of Marian Burbine's Wakefield Day Care Center.

Police say Marian allowed her husband to babysit the children in her care.
