BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (NBC) -
Police in Connecticut are searching for a couple who stole their son’s ashes from a funeral home without paying their balance.
Authorities said it all began when the couple arrived to pick up the cremated remains of their 8-month-old son.
Funeral home director Edgar Rodriguez said they owed him less than $800.
But, he said, when he stepped out of the room, the father went looking for the ashes and found them in a cabinet.
“He pulls the ashes out and then comes upstairs, tells his girlfriend he's got the ashes and they both run out the door. Do they truly find closure knowing that they actually stole the ashes? Do they truly find closure knowing that they never did everything correctly?” Rodriquez said.
Rodriguez said if the dad plans to return to Puerto Rico, he will not have the necessary paperwork to take along his son's remains.
And, he says, the upsetting part is that he told the couple he would happily have reduced the price.
“If they came up with a certain amount, just waive the rest of it, give them the ashes, let them go home,” Rodriquez said.
Police say they're using surveillance video to search for the suspects.
“We get phone calls we respond to them and the detective bureau is investigating,” a Bridgeport Police officer said.
Rodriquez said he is still willing to work with the couple to cover the balance due.
