Hockey coach accused of involvement in drinking party

Posted: Updated:
WINTHROP, Mass. (WHDH) - A Winthrop High School hockey coach is on leave after he was believed to be in the locker room while players were allegedly drinking alcohol.

Winthrop police and the Suffolk County district attorney’s office are investigating allegations of underage drinking and a couple of coaches could be in trouble as well.

Police said the high school coaches were drinking perhaps with their team members on school grounds Friday night.

Police also said that close to midnight officers on a regular patrol noticed the kids coming in and out of the area that connects the middle school with the rink.

“A number of empties in each room and the odor of alcohol being smelled in the hallway and in the locker room was a fresh odor of alcohol,” Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty said.

The officer reported he found players and coaches at the school late Friday but makes no mention of people intoxicated.

The team had lost a game in Woburn that day and made their way to the middle school where their lockers are.

Dale Dunbar is the team’s head coach and also the rink manager, he’s now on leave.

Football players at the high school spoke out about the incident.

“I know the coach and he’s a really good guy, everyone looks up to the coaches here,” said Vinny Sparacino, senior football player.

Coach Dunbar used to play for Winthrop High School in the late ‘70s before going on to Boston University and briefly, the NHL.

The school department is investigating, and they had no comment if any players had been suspended.
