Employees at one Quincy company shaved their heads for cancer this week.

It started as a joke, but now they are making sure science and cancer prevention is getting the last laugh.

Someone told an employee at Granite Telecommunications that if he shaved his beard they would donate $10,000 to Dana Farber.

The idea took off from there.

“It was kind of a no-brainer. To be able to impact people’s lives in that way, and not just our donation. The hair’s easy when you know that you’re going to have $5,000 donated as a result of that,” Jennifer Chu said.

In the end the company raised more than $2 million.
