Callahan Tunnel expected to open on or before March 12

BOSTON (WHDH) - Drivers who have had to find new routes from Boston to Logan airport and other areas north of the city may be able to start driving in the Callahan Tunnel sooner than predicted.

Project managers say the construction is nearly complete and that they plan on meeting or exceeding the March 12 deadline to reopen.

"Sometime next week I think we'll going to be able to predict an exact opening date and time,” MassDOT administrator Frank DePaola said.

The $25 million project included construction of a new road surface, curbs and new wall panels.

The panels will be installed after the tunnel is open during overnight construction.

"There will be some continued overnight shutdowns for the installations of the decorative wall panels," DePaola said.

Roughly 30 thousand vehicles traveled through the tunnel daily before its closure in December.

The progress is a good sign for the contractor too, for each day before the March 12 deadline that the tunnel is open they will receive a $71,000 bonus.
