BOSTON (WHDH) - A local group is honoring Boston Marathon bombing survivors as the first anniversary of the tragedy gets closer.

The charity is called The Next 26 and its goal is to host 26 social, sporting and service events before the 2014 Boston Marathon.

The first event was held Thursday night and the pictures depict a different scene from the one the city saw nearly a year ago.

Survivor Lee Ann Yanni is the survivor representative for Next 26, which was founded by Boston locals Chris Mathison and Nicholas Leydon.

“We were just kind of two Boston guys and this was an attack on our city and we thought ‘What can we do to keep this passion going throughout the year instead of letting it die down after the marathon?’” said Mathison.

“This is a city that is stronger a year later and I’m glad to have shared in a piece of that,” Leydon said.

Many survivors attended the event, including Yanni and Boston firefighter Jimmy Plourde, who helped Victoria McGrath out of the wreckage. McGrath was also in attendance.
