HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) - A 21-year-old mother has been arrested for allegedly leaving her two-month-old baby in a car Thursday morning according to police.

The woman had been drinking at the bar of a restaurant with the infant. When the bartender refused to serve her a second drink, the woman walked out with the infant. She walked back in 15 minutes later without the baby.

An Boston Police Detective Joseph King, was off duty at the time and inside the restaurant eating. He said his police training kicked in.

"Like they told us, if it doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t," King said.

Police responded to the parking lot and with the woman's permission, opened the car and checked on the infant, who was under a fleece blanket.

“This can't be tolerated we absolutely can’t have children alone in vehicles, especially in these temperatures," Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said.

As officers were investigating, the woman, who was believed to be impaired, caused a disturbance and was placed under arrest.

The child did not appear to be hurt but was taken to the hospital.

The mother was charged with reckless endangerment of a child and disturbing the peace.

She was arraigned in Hingham District Court on Thursday.
