PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- A driver heading to a South Florida urgent care center plowed her car through the children's store located next door, barely missing the pregnant woman who owns the business, officials said.

Investigators said the driver's BMW barreled into Haute Tots, located at 6933 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation, Wednesday, just after 6 p.m. "I screamed," said store owner Kelly Dean, when asked to describe the initial reaction when she saw the car headed directly at her.

Dean said she saw the collision unfold as if it had happened in slow motion. "I watched her hop the curb and go over the sign," she said. "I watched her come in."

Despite being eight months pregnant, Dean was able to move out of the way quickly and get out of the sedan's path. "I was inside, about five feet from where the car was," she said.

The vehicle ended up knocking down part of the wall to the neighboring urgent care center. "My boss asked me to get something," said store employee Tara Stratos when asked where she was at the time of the crash.

The car came to rest on top of the shelving Stratos was putting up only moments earlier. "Saved my life, probably," said Stratos. "I can't imagine the sign I was going to hang over a section of shelving that doesn't even exist anymore."

The family of the driver whisked her away from the scene before she could comment on the incident.

Fire officials said the driver was heading to the Urgent Medical Center right off Broward Boulevard and was trying to park. "The woman said she was trying to pull into a parking spot and was cut off by another vehicle," said Plantation Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Gordon. "At that point, she tried to stop, and the carpeting appeared to jam into the gas pedal. According to witnesses, that seems to corroborate the story. They said they heard the engine rev, and then the vehicle sped up and continued into the building."

Dean's husband said he is grateful his wife was not harmed in the incident. "All I'm thinking is, 'My 8-month-pregnant wife walking around in that store,' and what could happen," said Gamma Dean. "That's pretty terrifying."

Considering the number of people at the busy shopping center where Haute Tots is located, Stratos said it's truly a miracle that no one was hurt. "Everybody was so lucky," she said. "Nobody was hurt. I can't understand it."

Crews continued cleaning up the debris at the store Wednesday night. Thursday afternoon, the front of the store was boarded up and closed as the clean-up continued inside. They hope to see surveillance video footage released to see exactly what happened.

Police have not released the driver's name or revealed what charges, if any, she will be facing.
