Couple dies in Methuen fire

Posted: Updated:
METHUEN, Mass. (WHDH) - Two people are dead after a single-family home on Buttonwood Drive in Methuen went up in flames early Wednesday morning.

Police confirmed it was an elderly husband and a wife that died inside the home.

Police said the call came around 3 a.m. from one of their officers who was doing a routine check of the high school nearby.

Due to the flames and smoke of this two-alarm fire, police and firefighters were unable to get inside.

“It appears they were trying to make an exit. One of them was found just inside a bathroom window and the other just inside the front entry door,” Chief Steven Buote of the Methuen Police Dept. said.

Neighbors were woken with pounding on their doors. As a precaution, families in nearby homes were told to evacuate. The Red Cross was on scene to assist the families.

Firefighters believe the fire may have started in or near the attached garage. Investigators said it's too early to know what caused the fatal fire.

“This is the 9th and 10th fire death in Massachusetts since the beginning of the year. It was just two weeks ago we were in concord where an elderly couple succumbed to fire in a single family house,” Stephen Coan of the State Fire Marshal's Office said.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
