Newton police seek person who shined laser at planes, cars

NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) - Police in Newton are looking for a person who was reportedly shining a green laser at cars and two planes passing by Forte Park.

Around 5 p.m. Tuesday a caller reported a teen shining the laser into cars.

“This suspect pointed this green laser light at his face, described it as dazzling to his eyes. And he drove past them. He could feel the light was still on him on the back of his head,” said Lt. Bruce Apotheker, Newton Police Dept.

Two hours later the FAA notified police that they had traced a laser to the area after it was pointed at two planes flying overhead.

Both incidents involved green lasers, so police are investigating the likelihood of a connection. The FAA said the laser lit up the cockpits of two jets. One coming to Boston and the other heading out to Atlanta; the flights continued safely.

“That is an assault. Someone is pointing a light at you. It can go into your eyes. It is very disturbing to have that type of activity occur within our city,” said Lt. Apotheker.

Watertown police are also looking into the case. If the person is found, they could face both local and federal charges.
