HANSON, Mass. (WHDH) -
Massachusetts native Kristen Merlin is getting a lot of national attention after her appearance on the season premiere of ”The Voice” Monday night.
She wowed the coaches with her rendition of Sugarland’s "Something More," getting coaches Adam Levine and Shakira to turn their chairs.
Merlin said she chose the song because of a special tie she has with the band.
“I won a contest with Sugarland and was able to go out to Vegas to sing with them on stage. It totally felt like this is it, this is what I want. I ended up quitting my day job and jumped head first into music.”
One of the first gigs she got was at J.P. Ryan’s in Abington where fans and fellow musicians gathered to watch her performance.
“She's super talented and the first time I heard her I thought what most people think of when they hear her. ‘She should go on the show, she's that good,’” Stephen Mazzetta, a fellow musician, said.
She entered the competition hoping to catch the ear of country star Blake Shelton but he never turned around, so chose to join Team Shakira.
The pick was a surprise to her fans but they think it will be a good one.
“I would have picked Adam, but I get why she, it's different. So, I think she made a good choice,” one woman said.
It's a choice Merlin thinks it going to lead to a lot more.
