Sheriff confirms Aaron Hernandez involved in jail fight

Posted: Updated:
DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - Trouble for Aaron Hernandez at the Bristol County Jail. The accused murderer and former football star got into it with another inmate.

The sheriff said he wants to know how and why this fight started.

“We have a policy that one person is out there at a time. And somehow there were two inmates at a time,” said Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson.

To get to the bottom of this jailhouse fight the sheriff is looking at the surveillance video to see who started it and whether or not Hernandez should face more charges.

There was no word on if the two men were punching or shoving each other. Though the sheriff says nobody was hurt contrary to initial reports.

The former Patriots player was accused of killing Odin Lloyd. Hernandez says he's not guilty.

Because of his star status Hernandez is mostly in isolation. He is only allowed out of his cell for 3 hours a day and when he's out he’s not supposed to come in contact with any other inmates.

“In any prison facility there are always going to be inmates who, when there is somebody of notoriety in there that will maybe look to try to raise their own status in the institution by creating an issue. I'm not saying that happened in this case,” said Sheriff Hodgson.

Hernandez is in a different part of the jail until they can get to the bottom of the incident. Officials will then decide if the guard, Hernandez or the other inmate should be punished.

"Who of the two were the instigator, should both individuals be disciplined internally within our department with administrative discipline for violations of our policy and our rules,” he said.

The sheriff also said they won’t be able to comment too much in what they find during the course of their investigation.

7News has reached out to Hernandez’ attorneys but they have not returned phone calls.
