Last minute push at Revere casino vote

Posted: Updated:
REVERE, Mass. (WHDH) - With just a few hours left for Revere residents to vote on the new casino proposal at Suffolk Downs, people on both sides of the issue were campaigning heavily.

Both sides said they are optimistic about Tuesday’s vote.

“It is a great location. A great community that is welcoming and warm, and we are really excited about the possibility of helping transform this great community,” said Mitchell Etess, Mohegan Sun CEO.

However, not all are welcoming or want their community transformed.

“I think it is bad for the area. I'm a father of six kids and I don't want that kind of environment for my kids,” said Fabio Clavel, against casino.

Those in favor of the casino, including the mayor, picture a revitalized city.

"It means hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of the contract. In terms of revenue for the city. You know, millions of dollars into public safety. Education. Public services," said Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo.

East Boston voted no on a casino in November, forcing Suffolk Downs and Mohegan Sun to revise their plans, putting the casino on the Revere side of the property.

But despite all of the campaigning and signs everywhere some residents said they still haven't made up their minds.

"Completely indifferent, to be honest. I don't see how that would affect me," said one Revere resident.

“I don’t got nothing against it, or with it,” said another Revere resident.

Suffolk Downs supporters worked the coffee shops while religious leaders banded together working the phones. Both sides believe the vote will be close and say it all comes down to getting people to the polls.

The polls opened up at 7 a.m. in Revere. Stay with 7News for the results.
