Rio Olympics preparations

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (NBC) - With the end of the Sochi Winter Olympics, the attention now turns to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Preparations are already underway, but they've been plagued by delays, accidents and general concerns over whether the city is ready to play host.

Rio is the next Olympic city, and its mayor can't wait.

"There's no view like that. There's no place like Rio,” said Eduardo Paes, Rio Mayor.

The stadium for the opening ceremony is ready.

Most venues are not. The main Olympic Park is a building site.

“Things are on schedule, on time, and that's what we've got to prove that we can deliver things on schedule, on time,” said Paes.

Olympic officials say Rio hasn't a day to waste. He's a mayor in a hurry.

"I can guarantee that these games will be ready on time. One hundred percent,” Paes said.

However, Rio has a dark side.

Since it won the games, its police have struggled against the drug gangs that rule many neighborhoods.

They patrol aggressively, trying to make Rio safe for the summer games.

So with Sochi over, the pressure is on, and Olympic officials will be keeping the pressure on the mayor and on Rio.

Only 894 days to go before the next opening ceremony.
