Supporters on both sides of Revere casino rally

Posted: Updated:
REVERE, Mass. (WHDH) - Revere residents for and against a proposed Mohegan Sun casino held events ahead of a vote Tuesday on whether to approve the $1.3 billion project on 42 acres owned by Suffolk Downs.
The Boston Globe reports that about 200 people marched to Revere City Hall Sunday afternoon to protest the casino plans, while more than 400 people filled a VFW Hall for a rally in support of the casino organized by the Friends of Mohegan Sun political action group.

The Revere Chamber of Commerce, Revere Historical Society and Mayor Rizzo showed up for the rally at VFW Hall.

Revere residents approved plans by about 60 percent for a casino that would have straddled the Revere-Boston line, but that plan wasn't approved in East Boston. Tuesday's vote would allow the casino to be built on land in Revere.

Supporters believe that the casino will bring jobs and economic growth to the city. They also say it'll contribute millions of dollars in annual revenue.
Opponents believe it'll lead to addictions and a rise in crime.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
