Teen killed in Harwich crash after car race

HARWICH, Mass. (WHDH) - A Cape Cod teen is dead after police believe he crashed his car after a race early Sunday morning.

Police responded to a crash on Route 6 at around 12:40 a.m. where a vehicle had rolled over and struck a tree on the side of the road.

The 18-year-old occupant of the vehicle, identified as Michael Lawrence of Osterville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Police believe the victim was racing prior to the crash with another 18-year-old from Hyannis, who was issued a criminal complaint. Adrian Sterling was charged with reckless operation of a vehicle, speeding and racing a motor vehicle.

"It appears preliminary that he passed a car in the opposite lane of Route 6 and then lost control and slid off the highway off to the side of the road," said Sgt. Kevin Considine of the Harwich Police Department.

Family and friends gathered at Lawrence's home Sunday night.

"I just want people to know that he's such a great kid and I miss him and I love him," said his mother Beth Davis.

They say that Lawrence was into basketball and football, but there was nothing that he cherished more than his friends and family.

"He was like a brother to me. We did everything together," said Corey Woolfolk.

Officials think that a third vehicle may have been in the area and witnessed the crash, but wasn't involved. Investigators are looking for this vehicle.

Police are asking anybody who witnessed or has any information about the crash to contact the South Yarmouth police at (508) 398-2323.
