It wasn’t what they came to Sochi for but the US women’s hockey team says they are proud of their silver medals.
They spent Friday coming to terms with what they call heartbreak by being a team and sharing the pain with each other.
Team captain and Danvers native Meghan Duggan said she’s not thinking about Canada right now, but instead about her team.
Meghan said she will have some great memories of the team and their Olympic journey together.
“I think I’ll remember the journey. You remember the teammates, the friendships you’ve built. All the training, all the hardships and all the adversity you faced along the way,” Duggan said.
President Obama even reached out to the team to congratulate them on their silver medal.
“That’s incredible, I mean he’s obviously a busy guy. But we really appreciate the support and we know the whole country is behind us,” Duggan said.
Though they didn’t begin their day with smiles, they ended it on a high note. Hockey player and former Harvard student Julie Chu was selected to be the flag bearer in the closing ceremony.
“I don’t often get speechless and that’s kind of how I feel when I think about this because it’s such an honor, knowing how many great teammates on the hockey team there are as well as the entire Team USA,” Chu said.
Sunday is the final day of the winter Olympics, you will be able to see Chu and the rest of the team marching in the closing ceremony that night.
