Dog running for mayor in Texas

Posted: Updated:
UNDATED (NBC) - A Texas resident has filed out a petition requesting that his pet dog, Dylan Westie, gets added to an upcoming mayoral race ballot.

The dog owner hopes to get a message across to politicians.

"Dylan is 10 years old which would make him 70 in dog years so he's really qualified as far as his age. He has the age and the experience to do a good job,” said Mike Howard, Dylan Westie's owner.

Dylan Westie is not your average house pet.

"Dylan started tweeting yesterday, sent out his first tweet and he sent out three today,” said Howard.

Mike Howard filed his petition after being unhappy with the actions current city leaders were taking.

"We have a lot of catfighting going on in the city council, and what better way to resolve a good catfight than to have a dog in the mix,” Howard said.

This was Dylan's first political campaign. He wasn't actually expecting to make it onto the ballot for the mayoral race, he was just trying to make a point.

Well, he's gotten a lot of attention from it, and frankly, he's been getting tired of all the media attention.

Howard says he didn't collect enough names for his petition and obviously Dylan didn't provide an acceptable signature.

Still he hopes his effort sends a clear message to the elected city officials.

"I know politicians have egos and that's fine, but it should not be ego-driven to do what's right for the citizens,” said Howard.

And if not Howard says Dylan could always continue to weigh his options.

"There's also the possibility that Dylan could challenge this, and he would challenge it based on discrimination, K9 vs human or it could be physical impairment, four legs vs two,” Howard said.
