Newton manhole explosion caught on camera

Posted: Updated:
NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) - A manhole cover in Newton exploded Friday afternoon, scaring many and knocking out power to hundreds.

"All of a sudden we heard an explosion, the whole building shook, I thought a car hit the place, a bomb went off, we had no idea,” Alex Iliades said.

The manhole is located on a heavily-traveled section of Needham Street.

"It's very fortunate that people that know this area, it's a heavily traveled roadway, thank God no one was driving over the area when this explosion occurred,” Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker said.

Not only was the manhole cover blown off, but asphalt surrounding it was also destroyed and thrown behind area buildings.

"Really it's amazing that no car was right there because it would have done tremendous damage to the vehicle and possible injuries to the people inside that vehicle,” Apotheker said.

Power has been restored, but crews are still working to figure out what caused the explosion.
