Bates College student reported missing in Rome

Posted: Updated:
RYE, N.H. (WHDH) - A Bates College student studying abroad in Rome is missing tonight.

John Durkin was last seen Wednesday night at a bar, tonight his family is desperate for answers.

"This is an unusual event, we're not sure what happened but it’s not like him to go off,” Spence Lockhart, a family spokesperson, said.

Durkin is in Rome as part of a study abroad program through Trinity College of Connecticut.

Friends say John was with a group of students who recently went out for a night on the town.

"There were a number of them that went out on Wednesday night local time in Rome and the last time anyone saw him was 1:30 in the morning Thursday morning local time in Rome,” Lockhart said.

According to the family Durkin hasn't called anyone or used his debit card since.

They also say they haven't heard much from law enforcement in Rome, so his father has flown to Rome help find his son.

“It's your worst possible outcome. You're just so concerned about him,” Lockhart said.

His immediate family not the only ones concerned.

St. Teresa Church in Rye opened for a couple hours Friday so many in the small town could come and say a prayer for John.

The support greatly appreciated by the Durkin family.

"The focus is entirely on finding out what happened and where he is and bringing him back safe,” Lockhart said.
