Bitcoin machine at South Station runs dry

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Just two days into business the Bitcoin kiosk at South Station is out of currency.

The ATM-style Bitcoin dispenser allowed people to turn their cold hard cash into the untraceable digital currency.

Chris Yim founded Liberty Teller and was responsible for getting the machine in South Station. He says Bitcoin is better than credit cards.

“Bitcoin is essentially internet cash, the security of cash, but the convenience of a credit card. I authorize my funds to be sent to you, even if you had my address, there's no way you can access those funds, so as long as I take security measures on my end, I don’t have to worry about hackers or any of that kind of stuff,” Yim said.

7’s Tim Caputo tried out the currency himself. He converted $21 into bitcoin, but just a short time later when he went to spend it, it was only worth $19.28.

Like the stock market, Bitcoin exchange rates are constantly in flux, so depending on when you cash them out you can make or lose money.
