Tips to help prevent a roof collapse

Posted: Updated:
ANDOVER, Mass. (WHDH) - Heavy snow puts a lot of weight on your roof, putting it in danger of collapsing. But there are steps you can take to protect your home.

Roofs across the Commonwealth have been collapsing, including the roof of a MassDOT salt shed in Andover.

Here are some tips to prevent a roof collapse.
  • Clear snow off your roof. As snow sits on the roof it collects water, and weight. Items such as a roof rake can make it easier to reach the highest points of your house.
  • Houses with flat roofs are the most dangerous. Water rolls off slanted roofs more easily than their flat counterparts where it can gather at low points.
  • Ensure your gutters are clear. If water becomes trapped in gutters it can freeze and thaw repeatedly causing ice dams which can ruin your roof.
  • Clear storm drains. As the weather warms up snow melt will begin to puddle in yards and on the street. If storm drains are clear it will allow the water to flow more easily away from your property.
