Plymouth officer found guilty of using excessive force

Posted: Updated:
PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - A former Plymouth police sergeant has been found guilty of using excessive force against a suspected drunk driver and lying about it.

Surveillance video shows Shawn Coughlin, the former sergeant, hit the handcuffed suspect and then scuffle with him on the ground.

The jury in the case found Coughlin guilty after three hours of deliberation.

The incident happened in 2011, but Coughlin tried to cover up the incident by falsifying an incident report.

Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri said the department took immediate action on the case and informed the U.S. Attorney’s office.

“This is an isolated incident here in Plymouth and it is in no way a reflection on the officers of this department and the fine work they do on a daily basis,” Botieri said.

The charges against the original suspect were dropped. Coughlin is free until his sentencing in May.
