Burlington Mall closed after water main break causes sinkhole
Reported by Anthony Miller
BURLINGTON, Mass. (WHDH) -
The parking lot at the Burlington Mall is a few spots smaller after a sinkhole opened up there Thursday afternoon.
Officials say a water main break is the cause of the sinkhole, which partially swallowed one car.
"I saw a car in the hole earlier and that made me double take, I'd never seen anything like that before,” Anthony Mastracci said.
A tow truck was able to pull the car out, but not before the break forced mall officials to close up shop for the day.
Mastracci said he had just dropped his car off at the mall to have his brakes worked on.
"I was 15 minutes away and they called me back saying ‘hey we can't do anything because we’ve got to close up.’ Unfortunately they told me I had to come and pick my car up because they were closing because of the sinkhole,” he said.
Crews were working on the water main break late Thursday night, mall officials said they hope to reopen at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
It’s not clear what caused the break.
