It was a deadly end to a 5-hour standoff that put a Springfield hospital partially in lockdown.
Police said a man got into a fight with his wife inside a car, shot her, and then dropped her off at the Bay State Medical Center's emergency room.
Police later found the man sitting in his car outside the ER.
He was holding a gun to his head, apparently distraught over shooting his wife.
“The wife was shot once. The husband drove around for 20 minutes, wife dialed 911, talked to police dispatchers. She thought she was in an accident, she didn't know she had been shot,” said Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
Officers spent hours negotiating with him, but he wound up using the gun on himself.
The incident put the hospital's emergency room into partial lockdown -- but the rest of the hospital remained open.
The man's wife is currently in stable condition, and is expected to be ok.
