SOCHI, Russia (WHDH) - She's the reigning world cup champion in slalom and Tuesday night, Mikaela Shiffrin went for gold in the women's giant slalom.

The 18-year-old has strong ties to Massachusetts.

Her mom grew up in Lanesborough and her grandmother and uncle still live in the Berkshires.

Her mom and dad met in Boston.

Mikaela attended the burke mountain ski academy in Vermont.

She made her world cup debut just three years ago and now, she's the favorite in Friday’s slalom!

Fellow alpine racer, bode miller calls her a "phenom"!
