SOCHI, Russia (WHDH) -

Meryl Davis and Charlie White came to Sochi as the favorites for Gold and they didn't disappoint.

Meryl and Charlie have skated together for nearly their entire lives, but all that work and sacrifice came down to four minutes on the ice.

And they did what everyone expected, performed perfectly.

"To be able to go out on the ice and skate like how you dream about at night was ridiculous. It was amazing," said Charlie.

It's the first ever gold medal for the U.S. in ice dancing. Four years ago in Vancouver they took home the silver. This time it's them on top of the podium fulfilling a lifelong goal.

“Charlie and I have grown up together and we've been on this journey together so far for you know 16, 17 years and just the togetherness, the trust that we have in each other,” said Meryl.

Immediately after their performance they shared a moment out on the ice.

“I just told Meryl that I loved her. You know to go through the most stressful thing in most stressful thing in the world. You know we put so much pressure on ourselves and you know we did such a great job of being there for each other," said Charlie.

Meryl and Charlie also took home a bronze in the team competition meaning they now have an Olympic medal in every different color.
