Puppy rescued after stuck more than 2 hours inside pipe

DAVIE, Fla. (WHDH) - Fire crews worked feverishly to help save a 2-month-old puppy who found himself stuck in a pipe. Rescuers were able to reunite Sugar to her rightful owner just before 6:30 p.m. Monday, roughly two and a half hours after the Pomeranian fell down a pipe in the owner's lawn.

The dog's owner, Simone Walker, said she was washing her car while Sugar was playing outside her home at 5340 King Arthur Avenue in Davie. All of a sudden, the canine fell down the pipe.

Crews spent hours to come up with a way to get Sugar out safely. They dug holes around the pipe in hopes of getting him out.

The pipe is about four inches wide and at least three feet deep. "We are doing some air monitoring. The problem is, we can't get to the dog without digging," Davie Fire Rescue Chief Jorge Gonzalez said. "We got utility pipes, we got electrical lines running through here."

Walker said she was horrified when she realized what had happened to her puppy. "I just looked at, stared for a few seconds, I'm like, 'Oh my God, my dog just fell down,'" Walker said. "Then I called fire rescue. It happened so fast. It's shocking."

Crews had to stop digging earlier as they waited for the City of Sunrise to arrive to make sure there were no gas lines or pipes where the digging had begun, to avoid injuring the puppy or any nearby area.

Areas were marked to distinguish where those lines and pipes were.

Multiple crews from Davie Fire Rescue and the City of Sunrise dug holes around the pipe, slid a camera down the pipe and sent a firefighter down a nearby manhole. "We heard some sounds, so [I] feel the puppy is still alive," Gonzalez said. "Blowing air in just to keep the atmosphere good, to be able to breathe."

"He was shaky, wet and dirty," said Gonzalez.

Walker's brother was by her side, hoping for the puppy's safe return. "You hear a little whining noise, like he's crying, scared," said Lorenzo.

The pipe has been covered.
