Billerica chihuahua mauled by German shepherd

BILLERICA, Mass. (WHDH) - A family in Billerica is asking for the public's help in finding the owners of a German shepherd that attacked their chihuahua.

Elaine Santana said she took her small dog, Bear, out for a walk at a middle school Feb. 1 and saw two women playing with their German shepherd.

The dog, who was about 80 pounds heavier and not on a leash, ran over and attacked the chihuahua without warning.

"Bear was screeching in pain so we just picked them up and ran right to the hospital. We didn't get their information," said Santana.

"It was a serious dog attack. Essentially, the dog was mauled," said Deputy Chief Roy Frost of the Billerica Police Department.

Santana and her husband have spent almost $14,000 and counting for Bear's medical care, including surgery and a 13-day stay in an animal hospital.

Bear also suffered a seizure over the weekend, but a recent blood test has his vet hopeful.

The family been raising money online and so far have raised $6,000.

Now Bear's family wants the owners of the shepherd to come forward.

"We have a local bylaw that requires dogs be leashed, especially aggressive dogs,"said Frost.
