7’s Kayna Whitworth was at the frog pond with U.S. speedskater Patrick Meek. He will be racing the long track.
Her first couple of laps around the rink were not tragic, even though she could hardly put on her skates or fix her socks properly.
“I started to get the hang of it. Meek says you push with your glutes, not your legs, it makes a huge difference,” said 7’s Kayna Whitworth.
Then Meek showed Kayna how skaters conserve energy and keep pace by resting one arm on their back.
“It also helps with rhythm you know so you swing the other arm,” he said.
Next, Kayna chased Meek on the ice. Kayna called it a “disaster.”
Meek races Tuesday in the men's 10 thousand meter.
