Family dog shot by neighbor with bow and arrow

A family in Dighton is mourning after their dog, a German shepherd, was shot and killed by a neighbor with a bow and arrow.

Jessica Maher says she couldn't believe it when police came to her door and told her her family dog, Jake, had been shot; the wound so bad they had to euthanize the 2 and 1/2 year-old dog.

“We’re a mess, Jake was a huge part of our life. We cried all day yesterday and my husband is still a mess,” Maher said.

Next door neighbor Terry Sousa says her husband did indeed did shoot Jake.  She says the dog was attacking the chickens on her six acre farm.

“He shot and wounded it in the leg and tracked it thinking it was a coyote and it was their dog. He shot with a bow and arrow thinking it was a coyote

Dighton police say they won't be charging the Sousa, they say he was perfectly within his rights to shoot the dog.

“After the investigation this gentleman was cleared of any wrong doing. He was protecting his livestock and one of his sources of income,” Dighton police patrolman Shawn Cronin said.

Maher said she still feels it's wrong, and now she's worried about her young children who go often walking in the woods with their dad.

Police say it's an unfortunate incident, but the lesson is simple.

“You’ve got to keep control of your animals, it’s just an unfortunate event all around,” Cronin said.
