Accused 14-year-old Mattapan shooter appears in court

MATTAPAN, Mass. (WHDH) - The 14-year-old boy accused of accidentally shooting his 9-year-old younger brother in Mattapan appeared in court Monday.

Governor Patrick said The Department of Children and Families has been very involved with the family and in fact visited the family just seven days before the shooting.

7News has learned last June the 14-year-old allegedly physically fought with his 9-year-old brother and then allegedly threatened to kill his mother.

“He is very scared. He is very heart-broken. His family has been devastated. He comes from a family that cares very much about him. We look forward to litigating this case in court over the next several months,” said Michael Doolin, teen’s attorney.

Late Friday morning, police responded to the family's Mattapan apartment. Officers believed it was a terrible accident but say the gun belonged to the teen; now they are trying to figure out where he got it.

According to DCF the mother did ask for help with her teen son and at one point he was placed in a residential facility.

Mayor Marty Walsh said accidents such as the one in Mattapan must be avoided. He and other city leaders are now planning to hold a gun buyback program.

"The fact that a 14-year-old had a gun in the first place, there is something wrong with that…We've been talking about doing some type of a buyback program or other strategies for getting guns off of the street,” said Walsh.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, but the 14-year-old teen is being held on $50,000 cash bail.
