Annual Truck Day kicks off baseball season at Fenway

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - It feels like baseball season just ended, but already fans are gathering at Fenway for the annual Truck Day festivities.

The Red Sox equipment truck for the club’s Spring Training home in Fort Myers left Fenway on Saturday for the 1,480 miles trip.

Al Hartz of Milford has been making the trip behind the wheel for the past 16 years.

“I've been doing it since ‘98 and you get a little attention when you do this,” Hartz said.

Truck Day is a tradition that brings out Sox fans to Yawkey Way despite frigid temperatures and a 10:00 a.m. departure time.

“It's so interwoven into their lives that on an 18-degree morning they want to stand out in the cold and bid farewell to the truck,” said Dr. Charles Steinberg, Red Sox executive vice president.

There were some other goodies at Fenway on Saturday, including the World Series trophies and a poem by Red Sox poet laureate Dick Flavin.
