Gardner community mourns accidental death of 8-year-old

GARDNER, Mass. (WHDH) - A makeshift memorial has grown outside the Elm Street School in Gardner where a young boy was killed during an after school program Thursday.

According to a release from the DA, 8-year-old Colby O’Brien was killed when a large television and the cart it was on fell on him.

The boy was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The school was open Friday but grief counselors were on hand throughout the day to help students, faculty, and several aides that were present during the after-school program at the time of the incident.

According to a parent, he was helping one of the teachers push the cart that the big analog TV was on and it fell on top of him.

"My heart is just so broken for all these guys and of course his family. It's just an unfathomable loss," said Michelle Despres, the parent of Sonoro Despres, who was a friend of the victim.

"He was one of the only guys who really understood me. And he was really nice and just a really good friend of mine," Sonoro said.

Candles, flowers, and teddy bears were placed outside the school for O'Brien.

"I just wanted to say a prayer for the little man and pay my respects. I can’t imagine what the family is going through,” Darlene Russell, a Gardner resident, said.

The parents of the little boy are asking for privacy as they grieve.

According to the Worcester County DA there will be no charges filed in relation to this incident, which is being called a tragic accident.
