Hingham woman attacked by raccoon in home

HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) - A Hingham woman was attacked by a rabid raccoon that had somehow snuck into her home Wednesday night.

The 73-year-old woman was getting ready for bed and was half asleep when she thought her cat had entered her bedroom.

"If you're half asleep and not aware and thinking your cat curled up next to you, then you can definitely have that mistake happen," said Animal Control's Leslie Badger

It turned out to be a raccoon, which police said bounced over her, scratching her face and arm. The animal tested positive for rabies.

Investigators believe that the raccoon may have followed the cat through the cat door at the house.

The woman was taken to the hospital. The family didn't comment.

Neighbors recall hearing an animal noise sometime late Wednesday. They had to hear the news Thursday morning.

"She has a wonderful heart of gold," said a neighbor about the victim.

The raccoon has been euthanized, according to investigators.
