Local figure skaters to compete in new competition

Posted: Updated:
SOCHI, Russia (WHDH) -

7’s Nancy Chen reported exciting news out of Sochi about a pair of local figure skaters.

Overnight it was announced Sudbury's Simon Shnapir and Cranston, RI’s Marissa Castelli will skate the short program in the all new team figure skating competition. Team figure skating starts Thursday night and features only the best skaters from each country. Medals will be handed out Sunday.

Some controversy surrounds another new event, the snowboard slope style. Three borders have been hurt during practice including Shaun White who jammed his wrist. Changes are being made to the course to make it safer. White will be able to compete in the qualifying rounds.

Finally one final hockey nugget involving the rooms where team Canada's hockey team will be staying. They include twin sized beds lined up a couple feet from one another.

“That would definitely be a tight fit for me, imagine what it would be like for those athletes. We can only hope 6-foot-9-inch Zdeno Chara will push a couple of beds together,” said 7’s Nancy Chen.
