DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) - Police officers in Dartmouth have arrested a man after an 8-hour standoff at his house.

The suspect, 36-year-old Kevin Pacheco, reportedly sent a threatening email to faculty members at Roger Williams University where he formerly attended law school.

The standoff ended shortly after dark when police cut electricity to the home and Pacheco surrendered peacefully.

“We had reliable information that he was well armed,” Dartmouth Police Chief Timothy Lee said.

Family members say Pacheco suffers from depression, but he has never been violent.

“He wouldn't hurt anyone. He’s never hurt anybody, this kid’s never been arrested nothing. He’s a very very smart boy,” Pacheco’s cousin Filomena Macedo said.

After Pacheco surrendered he was arrested and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

Police say Pacheco’s father and brother were inside the house, but they were able to get out safely during negotiations.

Police searched the house Wednesday morning and reportedly removed guns, bullets and a book about becoming a serial killer.
