WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -
UMass Medical Center is warning patients after a dialysis patient at the hospital contracted Hepatitis C in late 2013.
After an extensive review the hospital is now alerting all patients who got treatment on the university campus to go and get tested.
The hospital released a statement on Monday about the situation.
"This situation was extremely unfortunate, and does not represent the high standards to which we hold our facilities and our staff. All staff on the unit have undergone supplemental education and training, and changes to the operating structure of the unit have been completed.”
The Dept. of Public Health is working closely with UMass and the Center for Disease Control as they work through the issue and figure out how this happened.
It's not clear how or who may have transmitted the disease to that one patient but it appears this point to be an isolated case.
