MALDEN, Mass. (WHDH) -
Authorities said postal worker Steven Bozzi broke into mail depositories and stole people's mail while on the job.
Police first received a tip from a business when Bozzi allegedly tried to use a voided gift card. Investigators said he was then caught stealing by surveillance after other postal carriers reported missing packages and letters. Police recovered nearly 8,000 pieces of mail they believe he stole. Some of the recovered items include iPhones, Kindles and gift cards.
Bozzi, who had routes in Malden and Somerville, entered a not guilty plea. He is out on bail Monday morning.
Area residents were surprised to hear that the suspect was the man they trust with their important shipments.
"It's the least person you would think. The mailman is delivering it, now he's stealing it. It doesn't make sense, it's a wonderful world,” Tim Carney, a Malden resident, said.
The Postal Service Inspector is also involved in an on-going investigation in Haverhill, but they are not releasing any other information at this time.
