Body found near Norwood school

Posted: Updated:
NORWOOD, Mass. (WHDH) - Police in Norwood are trying to figure out what lead up to a body being left near a local middle school.

A man was walking his dog near the woods when he discovered the body behind the athletic fields of Coakley Middle School. Police said the injuries are so severe they can't tell how old the victim is, only saying they know it's not a child. Police also said they believe the victim is a man, but still cannot be sure.

“The body has appeared to have suffered massive trauma, so identification may be difficult,” Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey said.

The body was discovered just before 5 p.m. School was already out for the day, but parents dropping their kids off for basketball practice saw the crime scene tape and feared the worst.

“It’s very scary, this is a very quiet town, never heard anything like that before,” one parent said.

“It’s very unnerving to hear, so close to home and where the kids go to school,” another parent said.

The district attorney said it doesn't appear the murder happened at or near the school.

“It occurred elsewhere, we have no reason to believe it happened in Norwood, we are looking for a secondary scene,” Morrissey said.

Morrissey’s office said it's also tough to tell how long the body was there, just a few hundred yards behind the middle school.

“They told me the medical examiner might not even know the time of death, it's going to be a difficult case,” he said.

Police removed the body overnight and school was open Thursday. Though school officials changed the student drop-off location to help divert the attention of the crime scene away from students. All after-school activities were canceled to minimize kids' exposure.

“There's no need to treat tomorrow differently than any other school day, school will operate as normal,” Norwood Police Chief Bill Brooks said.

Police said searching the crime scene in the sunlight Thursday will be critical to the investigation.
