Diverted passengers make it to Logan after smoke on plane

Oxygen masks deployed on what was supposed to be a short flight from Dulles to Logan Airport.

“Normally, a flight from D.C. to Boston is uneventful but when the oxygen masks start dropping off, suddenly the world is full of good people because no one was panicking and wondering why it dropped,” said one passenger.

15 minutes into United Express Flight 3759 the crew reported smoke in the aircraft. Passengers thought the plane had stabilized after losing altitude.

But then the plane and masks dropped again.

“This time you can smell smoke. I was sitting near the back, we could smell it. It was a really strong smell. And then this time the flight attendant gets on and you can tell they're panicked in their voices, and they're like, 'there is smoke, so please use your oxygen masks,’” said another passenger.

The 58 people onboard were told they were heading back to Dulles but the plane never made it there. Instead, it was diverted to Delaware's New Castle Airport.

“They said, 'we're having an emergency landing.' then there is a little bit of butterflies,” said a passenger.

“For the last 15 minutes, I think. When she was saying, 'emergency evacuation,' the statistics are going through your head. The chances of that ending well were so low,” said another passenger.

But the plane landed safely.

Passengers waited on the cold tarmac as emergency vehicles rushed out.

No one was hurt but the fears of what could have been, are still fresh.

“When I talked to my sister on the phone, she said, 'Ash, I love you.' and that’s when I realized that it could have been bad. So I'm just really thankful for what the pilot was able to do and for the flight attendants' bravery to keep us calm,” said another passenger.

The passengers were put on a later flight to Logan Airport, but some passengers chose to drive instead of getting back on a plane.
