Beverly police cruiser involved crash

Posted: Updated:
BEVERLY, Mass. (WHDH) - Sky7 HD was over the scene of a serious crash on Elliot and Rantoul streets involving a police cruiser on Tuesday afternoon.

The officer behind the wheel of the cruiser was injured; the driver of the other vehicle was also hurt and taken to the hospital.

The damages were so bad the Jaws of Life had to be used to get the officer out.

"Once the fire department got there they realized that they were going to have to cut the roof off the cruiser to extricate the officer,” Beverly Police Chief John LeLacheur said.

The officer and the unidentified female driver were taken to Beverly Hospital. Investigators say the officer was on his way to a call.

Officials say the officer slowed down to go through an intersection and was hit by the white car.

"A vehicle was traveling easterly on Elliot Street, went into the right turn only  lane and then proceeded straight then impacted the cruiser in the intersection," LeLacheur said.

No charges have been filed, but Beverly police will continue to investigate. Both people who were hospitalized are expected to be released Wednesday.
