Worcester woman cuts baby from womb

Posted: Updated:
WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) - The trial began Monday for Julie Corey in Worcester, who is accused of cutting the unborn child out of another woman who later died.

In late July of 2009 prosecutors say Julie Corey beat and strangled Darlene Haynes, an acquaintance of hers, in a Worcester apartment building.

Corey’s also accused of cutting Haynes' unborn child from her womb and passing the baby off as her own to family and friends.

The graphic testimony was nearly too much for Haynes' father to listen to.

Attorneys for both sides laid out their cases during opening statements.

“Julie Corey took Darlene Haynes baby to a cook out to show it off to family and friends,” said Dan Bennett, prosecutor.

“There will be a baby in the possession of Julie Ann Corey and absolutely no blood on her person and her apartment,” said Michael Wilcox, defense attorney.

Defense attorneys say there is no evidence tying Corey to the killing and in the days after the murder, Worcester police ignored other leads and focused solely on Julie Corey.

“Please understand as you hear this evidence that leads were not followed,” Wilcox said.

The trial is beginning more than four and a half years after Darlene Haynes was murdered.

Fred Haynes hopes he will finally get answers after all this time.

The child in this case survived. She is now four years old and in the custody of her biological father. He is expected to be called as a witness during the trial possibly some time later this week.
