Tanker crashes and burns in Fall River

Posted: Updated:
Fall River, Mass. (WHDH) - A gasoline tanker rolled over and burst into flames Monday morning sending plumes of smoke into the air in Fall River.

The truck was taking the exit five ramp on Rt. 24 north bound to President Ave when it rolled over off the ramp. Both sides of Rt. 24 were shut down. Roads between 195 north bound and 79 south bound were also closed.

Fall River Fire Dept. called several other area fire departments to assist with putting out the massive fire.

β€œVery thick, almost black completely smoke. Just heading towards the street. I started to hear explosions. I mean, pretty loud explosions,” said Mason, witness.

β€œIt was definitely scary. I kept trying to back up, like, I kept thinking the flames were going to come at me. They were a good 12 feet in the air. Like, 30 feet diameter,” one woman said.

Police knocked on doors and told residents to leave the area because of toxic fumes and rising flames.

The left lane of Route 24 reopened Monday afternoon, but Exit 5 remains closed.

The driver of the tanker was rushed to Rhode Island hospital, and authorities say that her injuries are not to be life-threatening. Police say they are looking at speed as a possible factor.
