Man fakes arrest for elaborate wedding proposal

Posted: Updated:
NEW LONDON, N.H. (WHDH) -- - New Hampshire police officers asking a couple to stop in the name of love!

They were pulled over and Samantha Labo thought her boyfriend was being cuffed and taken into custody.

She had no idea that it was all part of an elaborate proposal.

Labo was with her boyfriend Matt Van Vliet when they were pulled over by New London police in September.

“I didn't know what to think. It was just terrifying. I didn’t know what to think, I didn’t know if this was really happening,” Labo said.

When officers pretended to put the cuffs on Matt she lost it.

Officers spread up the process giving Matt a quick pat down, finding the ring box in his pocket.

That's when matt got down on one knee and asked his college sweetheart to marry him.

Matt wanted to get police involved in his proposal because the pair met in jail.

When they were freshmen, they were among 150 Colby-Sawyer students who were picked up after a party got out of control.

Now they have a different kind of notoriety the kind that happens when your proposal video goes viral.

“Now it's gone big like this it’s kind of cool. We’re kind of overnight famous people, it's kind of funny,” Van Vliet said.

The couple plans to get married in August of 2015.
