Hingham's proposed noise law could ban lawn mowing

Posted: Updated:
HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- - A new law proposed on the south shore has some people saying noise complaints have gone too far.

A seven-page draft of the proposed noise bylaw in Hingham limits the amount of time loud noises can be created through construction, music or other types of activities.

The limit of the ordinance between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. would be 55 decibels, or about the volume of a normal conversation. At night the limit would drop to 45 decibels.

The law specifically prohibits creating noises above this limit for more than 15 minutes in any hour.

Many residents said they think the limit is too low, or that there shouldn’t be a specified limit at all times.

If a police officer were to respond to a noise complaint they would have the authority to issue a $100 fine for a first offense.
