Convicted Rep. Carlos Henriquez brought to Statehouse in handcuffs

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (AP) - State representative Carlos Henriquez appeared before legislators in handcuffs on Friday.

Henriquez is currently serving a 6 month sentence after being convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.

Asked if he planned to resign, he did not respond.

Henriquez attorney says he is innocent and is planning an appeal

“I do think the sentence given was harsh. I think it was done as a means... because of his position. I’ve been a prosecutor and defense attorney for many years and I’ve never seen that happen on two misdemeanor accounts.” said attorney Stephanie Soriano-Mills

The conviction did prompt an outcry for him to step down from several officials, including the Governor.

“I’m asking that representative Carol Henriquez immediately resign from his position as representative of the house.” said State Rep. Robert Deleo.

Henriquez was found guilty of assault and battery and is expected to appeal.
