Mobster arrested, faces charges in robbery portrayed in 'Goodfellas'

Posted: Updated:
More than 30 years after a $6 million airport heist that was dramatized in the movie "Goodfellas," a reputed mobster has been arrested at his New York City home -- charged in the robbery and in a murder from 1969.
Vincent Asaro, who is 78 years old, was named along with his son and three other defendants in a wide-ranging indictment alleging murder, robbery, extortion, arson and other crimes from the late 1960s through last year.
It accuses Asaro of helping to direct the Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport in 1978 -- one of the largest cash thefts in U.S. history.
According to court papers, a cooperating witness told investigators that he took part in the robbery at the direction of Asaro. He said each robber was supposed to be paid $750,000, but that most didn't get their share -- in some cases because they were killed first.
Asaro and his son, Jerome, were both alleged captains in the Bonanno organized crime family. They're also charged in a 1984 robbery of $1.25 million worth of gold salts from a Federal Express employee.
All five defendants are in custody.
